Philadelphia police officer suspended

A Philadelphia police officer has been suspended with intent to dismiss over alleged drinking on the job and while in uniform.

A Philadelphia police officer has been suspended with intent to dismiss over alleged drinking on the job and while in uniform.

William Haviland, 42, has been on the force for seven years. He was suspended Monday morning, said Philadelphia Lt. Ray Evers, after the accusations of drinking were raised during his Sunday-night shift.

No charges have been filed, but police said that could change soon. It's not clear what charges Haviland might face, but one allegation is that he might have been driving a police vehicle while drinking. The case is being referred to the District Attorney's Office, Evers said.

Haviland was assigned to the 26th District, which includes Fishtown and parts of Northern Liberties and Port Richmond.

Police have not released a detailed account, but think that Haviland drank alcohol at a bar or restaurant in the Northeast on Sunday night while on duty and in uniform. He allegedly had a police vehicle with him. The exact location of the bar has not been released.

At some point that night, Haviland returned to his station, where his supervisor suspected he had been drinking and had him take a Breathalyzer test, a police source said.

Haviland's suspension comes on the heels of the highly publicized arrest of Inspector Daniel Castro on Friday on federal charges of extortion and bribery.
