An argument over a woman sparked a gun battle on a Southwest Philadelphia street early Saturday, leaving one man dead and four others wounded.

About 12:10 a.m., police said, a burgundy Cadillac pulled to the corner of 65th and Chester, and a woman emerged from the car. Two men who were standing on the corner exchanged angry words with the driver and two male passengers, then pulled out guns and fired.

The men in the car fired back, police said.

As the driver tried to pull away, he was shot in the neck and lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a parked car.

Tawayne Foster, 21, later died of his injuries. The four other men, whom police declined to identify, were wounded. They were taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

In all, police said, more than two dozen shots were fired.

Police were analyzing shell casings found at the scene to determine what type of weapons were involved. The investigation was continuing, and police said the gunmen would likely face criminal charges.
