Firefighters early Monday discovered a charred body inside a burning car on a Delaware County elementary school playground.

Rescue workers found a Hyundai sedan fully engulfed in flames about 3 a.m. at the Loomis Elementary School in Marple Township. After dousing the blaze, firefighters found the remains in the driver's seat.

"The body was severely damaged by the fire," said Chief Tom Murray of the Marple Township police, adding that investigators had not been able to determine the identity or even the gender of the victim.

Police, who have determined who owned the car, have not been able to determine whether the person was dead before the fire.

"It's obviously one of the things we're interested in knowing," Murray said.
