RUMSON, N.J. - Police issued motor-vehicle summonses to a Monmouth County fire chief who, authorities said, jumped off a bridge into the Navesink River after a crash.
Shaun C. Foley, 27, was charged with driving while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to report an accident, and driving recklessly.
Foley has resigned as chief of the volunteer fire department in Fair Haven, attorney Mitchell Ansell said. He also stepped down from his jobs as special police officer and police dispatcher in Rumson. Ansell said Foley had pleaded not guilty.
Rescuers from about 16 agencies took 45 minutes to pluck Foley from the river Sunday night. Foley had walked away after his chief's car struck a utility pole, police said. He jumped off the Oceanic Bridge when a police officer urged him to get in his patrol car, authorities said. - AP
