Teachers at Jack M. Barrack Hebrew Academy, a private school in Bryn Mawr, went on strike yesterday.
The administration at the 315-student school for grades six to 12 - the former Akiba Hebrew Academy - has canceled classes for this week. No talks between the school and its 49 teachers, who are represented by a local of the American Federation of Teachers-Pennsylvania, were scheduled as of yesterday.
Jared Freedman, an AFT-PA spokesman, said that the main issue was proposed cuts in matching pension payments by the school. He said the payments would be reduced by more than 50 percent under the school's latest proposal.
A statement on the school's Web site said that it has maintained enrollment only by increasing financial aid to students. It added: "We have offered our faculty as generous an economic package as our stretched finances permit." School spokeswoman Beverly C. Rosen declined to comment further. - Dan Hardy
