Cops: DUI driver hit cop

Angel Perez, 49, has been charged with driving under the influence of intoxicants after his pickup truck struck a police officer on foot patrol early yesterday at 7th and Mifflin streets in South Philadelphia, police said.

The officer suffered minor injuries after the truck, driven by Perez, of Dudley Street near 6th, struck him in the leg when Perez failed to stop at a stop sign about 12:25 a.m., police said.

Unrequited love letters

Members of the Philadelphia police Homeland Security Bureau were called yesterday morning to investigate a bizarre discovery at an Amtrak demolition site near 31st and Arch streets, police said. Workers noticed a timing device and wires that ran up the length of an old smoke stack. Police determined that the wires led to a series of LED lights that spelled out "I love you Sonia," said Homeland Security Chief Inspector Joe Sullivan. Sullivan said the incident was being investigated as a criminal matter. Tipsters can call 215-686- 1173.

Slain teen is identified

A teenager who was found shot to death at 7th and Spruce streets in Center City early Sunday has been identified as Rahfeak Anthony Griggs, 17, of Mc-Kean Street near 22nd, South Philadelphia. Griggs, who was shot once in the chest, was found by a passer-by shortly after midnight.

A homicide investigator said the teen apparently had been shot during an altercation at 15th and Ellsworth streets and was then dropped off by someone he knew at 7th and Spruce. No arrests were made.

N. Phila. victim is ID'd

A man who was shot to death Sunday night in North Philadelphia has been identified as Sharif Garner, of Edgley Street near 23rd, North Philadelphia. Garner was shot once in the chest about 5:45 p.m. at 19th and Diamond streets.

Blvd. victim was Olney man

An Olney man who was killed when he was ejected from his car on Roosevelt Boulevard Sunday night has been identified as Derrick Avent, 30, of Somerville Avenue near 3rd Street.

Police said Somerville lost control of his 2004 Honda Accord on the Boulevard near D Street, which crossed over the median and flipped before striking a tree about 10 p.m.

Pa.: Act averted 'catastrophe'

More than 500 education jobs were either saved or created in Pennsylvania as a result of the federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, according to education officials.

During a conference call with reporters yesterday, Education Secretary Arne Duncan said the funds staved off an "educational catastrophe" by saving hundreds of teachers' positions. Pennsylvania received about $100 million in federal education funds.
