A 37-year-old man committed suicide on the streets of Oxford Circle Saturday evening after carjacking a woman in the parking lot of BJ's Wholesale Club on Red Lion Road, police said.
The man, whose identity was not released, fired one shot during the carjacking about 6:13 p.m., but did not injure anyone. The car was found running but unattended in the parking lot of a Shop Rite at Levick Street and Oxford Avenue. Police later found the man on foot at Levick Street and Tabor Avenue, where he shot himself once in the head as they attempted to stop him, police said.
Forum on charters tomorrow
A public forum will be held tomorrow to discuss a proposed amendment to Philadelphia's charter-school policy that would allow charter schools to increase student enrollment levels and/or alter existing grade configurations.
The forum will begin at 6 p.m. in the Philadelphia Education Center, 440 N. Broad St. Individuals interested in speaking must register by calling 215-400-5638 by 4 p.m. today.
2 arrested in home invasion
Camden police have arrested two suspects in a home invasion on Sept. 18 on the city's Atlanta Road in which three men robbed a family at gunpoint.
The suspects were identified as Nakeen Green, 18, of Chesapeake Road, and a 17-year-old male, of Ironside Road. A tipster said he saw the 17-year-old dumping a bag containing wallets and cellular phones into a storm drain near the home of one suspect. Police recovered several items belonging to the victims.
The 17-year-old was arrested on Oct. 13 in front of his residence. The next day, cops arrested Green. Police said that the juvenile is suspected of the robbery of a Mexican restaurant on Sept. 27.
Man charged in triple robbery
Camden police said that Myron George Gaither, 40, of Camden, specialized in burglarizing one liquor store on Mt. Ephraim Avenue, hitting it three times this month.
Police said that Gaither, who has been arrested and charged with burglary and related offenses, broke into the store on Oct. 9 by smashing the front door glass. On Oct. 13 he entered the store through the same door, police said, and, on Oct. 14, he entered through a temporary plywood door that the owner had installed until the glass was repaired. He is accused of stealing cigarettes and liquor.
