Memorial honoring police
Police and Comcast officials last night unveiled an interactive memorial that honors the 266 police officers who have died in the line of duty since 1828.
The memorial, which features a 42-inch touch-screen panel that provides details about every officer's life and death, will be on display today at the Comcast Center, at 17th Street and JFK Boulevard. The memorial will later be installed at Police Headquarters. A Web site - www. phillyheroes.org - also contains information on the fallen cops.
Woman, 21, found shot dead
A 21-year-old woman was found slumped over the wheel of a silver Jeep Cherokee with a gunshot wound to the face yesterday afternoon on Newkirk Street near Ridge Avenue in Strawberry Mansion, police said. The unidentified victim was pronounced dead at the scene. Police identified no suspects or motive.
Series-ring hearing waived
A Citizens Bank Park janitor accused of stealing a World Series ring he found in a ballpark bathroom waived his preliminary hearing yesterday.
Anthony Mobley, 53, allegedly found the $10,500 ring, which belonged to John Brazer, the team's director of publicity, in a men's room on the executive-suite level Aug. 31. Police say Mobley pocketed the ring and then hid it on the top shelf of a supply closet in a public men's room in the park's Hall of Fame Club.
Hospice holds open house
St. John's Hospice, in its 46th year of providing shelter and food to homeless men in Philadelphia, will honor its staff of volunteers and donors at an Open House at 2 p.m. Sunday at the hospice, 1221 Race St.
Honored for victims aid
Victim/Witness Services of South Philadelphia will celebrate two decades of serving the community at 6 p.m. today at Paradiso Restaurant & Wine Bar, 1627 E. Passyunk Ave.
The Leadership Award will go to Edward J. McLaughlin, founding board member, former police chief inspector and former Licenses & Inspections commissioner. The Community Involvement Award will go to Irvine Smalls Jr., executive director of the FC Harlem Lions, a youth soccer team. The Service Award will go to Phu Tien, victim advocate/volunteer coordinator.
Delco driver killed on I-95
A Delaware County motorist was killed Wednesday night, when his 2002 Chevrolet Malibu crashed on Interstate 95 in Wilmington.
The crash occurred about 11 p.m. in the southbound lanes when Edward Nott Jr., 30, of Aston, lost control of his car and it hit a steel support beam. Nott, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
