In 2 S. Phila. shootings, 1 dead, mother & son hurt

Two shootings on South Philadelphia streets Sunday night left one man dead and a mother and son from Sharon Hill injured.

The mother, 36, and her son, 18, whose identities have not been released, had just left a party on 3rd Street near Porter when gunfire erupted about 8:20 p.m., according to South Detectives.

The son had already gotten into the front seat of a car when he was shot twice in the stomach and once in the side, police said.

The mother, who appeared to be making her way to the parked vehicle, was found outside of the car with a single gunshot wound to her buttocks, police said.

Both were listed in stable condition yesterday at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. South Detectives said that robbery does not appear to be a motive in the shooting and that the attack does not appear to be related to the party. Police said that they found several shell casings but no gun at the scene.

Less than four hours later, police responded to a shooting on Chadwick Street near Morris that claimed the life of 25-year-old Horace Cunningham.

Cunningham, of 35th Street near Indiana Avenue, North Philadelphia, was shot five times in his stomach, back and legs about 11:55 p.m., according to police. He was pronounced dead at the Hosptial of the University of Pennsylvania at 1:25 a.m. yesterday.
