Remains of La Ronda to serve as clean fill

The remains of La Ronda, the Gothic-style castle in Bryn Mawr that was razed Oct. 1, are being trucked to a former quarry in Lancaster County to be used as clean fill.

Yesterday, three dump trucks owned by Brubacher Excavating Inc., the firm hired to demolish La Ronda, made the 40-mile trip from Bryn Mawr to the former Maxwells Hill Quarry. The trucks dumped wood and concrete fragments from La Ronda onto the dirt floor of the quarry, on an unmarked road just south of Route 23 between Churchtown and Morgantown.

The quarry is the property of Benjamin S. Brubacher, president and owner of B&B Reclamation Inc. in nearby Bowmansville.

La Ronda, a Spanish-revival masterpiece, was designed by architect Addison Mizner for a wealthy Philadelphia industrialist in 1929. It was demolished to make way for a new owner's dream house. - Bonnie L. Cook
