The Bridgeport Post Office, which had been threatened with closing as part of an austerity move, will remain open, State Sen. Daylin Leach (D., Delaware/Montgomery) said yesterday.
"No one can argue that the downturn in the nation's economy has affected us at the state and local levels," Leach said. "In times like this, it is encouraging when we can keep local businesses and branches of government functional."
U.S. Rep. Joe Sestak (D., Pa.), who was involved in talks to save the Bridgeport branch, was expected to provide details at a news briefing today. The Postal Service this summer began reviewing local branches for consolidation with other post offices. The Bridgeport location, a branch of the Norristown Post Office, was targeted for consolidation. But after further study of customer surveys and other data, the Postal Service reversed itself, Leach said. - Bonnie L. Cook
