Matthews won't run for lieutenant governor again

The approach of the 2010 elections was openly acknowledged in Norristown yesterday, when the three Montgomery County commissioners - each of whom has run for office in Harrisburg before - took actions dealing with next year's state races.

During a discussion to plan the county's 2010 budget, Commissioners Chairman James R. Matthews volunteered that he would not repeat his 2006 run for lieutenant governor, despite much consideration. At 60, Matthews said, he could not see using the office as a stepping-stone, as he once did.

"The lieutenant governor position is just a bridge," Matthews said. "There's not a whole lot to do."

Commissioners Vice Chairman Joseph M. Hoeffel III was then replaced as the county's Election Board chairman - he had to quit the panel to run for governor - by formerly out-of-power commissioner Bruce L. Castor Jr. - Derrick Nunnally
