A ceremony at West Chester's courthouse honored a fallen Parkesburg police officer yesterday, initiating Chester County's version of Philadelphia's Hero Cop program.
With assistance from James J. Binns, a lawyer who founded the Philadelphia tribute, members of the Chester County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 11 installed a bronze plaque outside the courthouse along Market Street in memory of Douglas H. Pyle, a 20-year-old officer killed in the line of duty in 1988.
The lodge eventually hopes to honor all nine of the Chester County officers killed on the job, dating back to a sheriff in the 1800s, said Tredyffrin Township Detective Sgt. John R. Bailey, who chaired Chester County's Hero Plaque program. - Kathleen Brady Shea
