Philadelphia police yesterday released a sketch and a more complete description of a gunman who shot a West African student in a botched robbery Monday morning.
The victim, Mamadou Makadji, 22, had been in the country for less than three months and had trouble understanding the robber's commands. The robber became frustrated and pistol-whipped and shot Makadji, police and family members said.
Police described the gunman as a black male between the ages of 19 and 21 with a dark complexion. He stood about 6 feet tall and had a thin build.
He was wearing a green Polo shirt with an orange logo, blue jeans, and house slippers. He was carrying a silver .45-caliber semiautomatic handgun.
The man approached Makadji and two friends as they were sitting on a bench in Elmwood Park in Southwest Philadelphia about 1:12 a.m. Monday.
He entered the park from 71st Street and Buist Avenue and ordered the men to empty their pockets.
Makadji's two friends escaped unharmed. Makadji was shot under the left arm after he did not comply fast enough with the robber's demands. He was declared dead a short time later at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.
Makadji taking an intensive English-language course at Temple University. Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Homicide Unit at 215-686-3334, 3335, or 3336.
