A state House committee yesterday approved a bill limiting air traffic at the former Willow Grove Naval Air Station.
By a unanimous vote, the House Transportation Committee advanced legislation that would prevent commercial air traffic at the facility - now known as the Horsham Joint Interagency Installation - by restricting use to homeland security, national defense, or emergency preparedness missions. The legislation also requires all non-military occupants of the base to comply with local ordinances, including zoning regulations and property taxes. The bill (SB48) now goes to the full House.
Because it was amended in the Senate to allow the Delaware Valley Historical Aircraft Association to remain on the base, the bill must be returned to the Senate for final passage. In 2011, the federal government turns over the 1,100-acre facility to the commonwealth while operations will be run by the U.S. Air Force. - Amy Worden
