Three Chester City men pleaded guilty to attempting to kill an alleged drug dealer in 2006, the Delaware County district attorney announced yesterday.
Abdul-Malik Abdus-Shakur and Anthony Major were charged with criminal conspiracy to murder and aggravated assault. Major was sentenced to 10 to 20 years in prison; Abdus-Shakur was sentenced to 71/2 to 20 years in prison. Hassan Lamar Merritt was charged with criminal conspiracy to murder and recklessly endangering another person. He was sentenced to 51/2 to 15 years in prison.
According to the district attorney, police received information from a wiretap that the three men were going to kill Alfonso Caldwell, of Chester. Caldwell is awaiting trial in federal court for drug trafficking.
On June 6, 2006, the three were arrested after Major shot at Caldwell - who was standing outside a garage near Third and Kerlin Streets in Chester - from a van driven by Merritt. Major and Abdus-Shakur exchanged gunfire with police. - Mari A. Schaefer
