Business manager gets 40 months for fraud

A Doylestown woman who was business manager for a Montgomery County ophthalmology practice was sentenced in federal court yesterday to 40 months in prison for defrauding her employer of more than $780,000, U.S. Attorney Michael L. Levy said.

Susan Russell, 46, inflated her salary between 2004 and 2007 by submitting false information to the firm that handled payroll for the practice, Ophthalmic Associates, according to a news release from Levy's office. The practice has offices in Lansdale and Fort Washington.

Russell claimed to work an average of 22 to 32 hours a day, seven days a week, and was paid at least $783,000 more than she was entitled, Levy said. He said Russell had recorded her income in numerous employment categories in the financial records, and paid some company expenses with her personal credit card to conceal financial shortfalls. She pleaded guilty to wire fraud and money laundering in February.

U.S. District Judge Anita B. Brody also ordered Russell to pay $991,486 in restitution, of which she has already paid $327,203, and serve three years of supervised release. - Inquirer staff
