CLE ELUM, Wash. - Seven chimpanzees that had been used in biomedical research in Perkasie, Bucks County, before being sent last June to a Cle Elum-area sanctuary have been designated honorary citizens of the central Washington town.
The City Council passed the proclamation unanimously Tuesday night, the Daily Record in Ellensburg reported. The proclamation also praised Cle Elum residents for donating food, blankets, toys, and their time to support the chimps, now at Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.
Annie, Foxie, Jamie, Jody, Missy, Negra, and Burrito (the lone male) had been living at Buckshire Corp. in Perkasie. They were used in hepatitis B research before being retired in 1996. - AP and Inquirer staff
