When all is said and done, maybe Timothy Matteson should have just surrendered. As it was, his body was recovered yesterday morning in the Delaware River near Penn's Landing just north of the Ben Franklin Bridge, according to authorities.
How he got there is a tale that begins with a 3 a.m. call yesterday to police to report two men breaking into autos in the parking lot of Dave & Buster's entertainment complex off Columbus Boulevard.
Police arrested Mark Vandergrist, 23, of the 3000 block of Rosehill Street in Kensington, and saw the second suspect jump into the river. Police said officers saw him swimming.
The Marine Unit recovered the man's body shortly before 9 a.m. near Dave & Buster's. Jeff Moran, spokesman for the Philadelphia Medical Examiner's Office, identified the body as that of Matteson, 25, of the 2900 block of Rosehill Street. Vandergrist was charged with theft from a motor vehicle.
