NEPTUNE, N.J. - A four-seat plane crashed last night in about three feet of river water near this Monmouth County community. The Coast Guard said it was not clear whether anyone had been killed or injured.

The plane went down about 6:50 p.m. about a quarter-mile from the Shark River Municipal Marina in Neptune, Coast Guard Petty Officer Nyx Cangemi said.

The wreckage was entirely submerged, and rescue workers said the fuselage was buried deep in the riverbed mud.

It was not known how many people were on the plane, Cangemi said. Witnesses, though, said they had not seen anyone pulled from the wreckage.

The rescue operations included a Coast Guard boat and several local agencies.
