N. Phila. death ruled homicide
The death of Carlos Torres, who was found bleeding from a head injury on 4th Street near Cambria, North Philadelphia, last Friday morning, has been ruled a homicide.
Investigators initially thought that Torres, 55, of C Street near Courtland, Feltonville, might have suffered the injury in a fall, but autopsy results showed he had died of a blow to the head, said Homicide Sgt. Tim Cooney.
Cop shoots robbery suspect
A 20-year-old man was shot and wounded by police early yesterday after cops said he pulled a gun on an officer on 44th Street near Baltimore Avenue, West Philadelphia.
Police were taking a robbery victim around the neighborhood when two suspects were spotted. An officer shot one of them when he pulled a gun, said Lt. Frank Vanore, a police spokesman. The suspect was identified as Rashan Berry, 20, of Whitby Avenue near 52nd Street, West Philadelphia. He was hit in the groin and shoulder. An alleged accomplice, Robert Russell, 27, also was arrested.
New charges in Breed meth case
Arthur J. Bono Jr., who was among 15 persons originally charged in the "Operation Breed on a Wire" meth investigation in 2005, has been charged with additional drug charges for allegedly obtaining 40 pounds of crystal meth and distributing them through an intermediary.
The drugs were sold to members of the Breed motorcycle gang, said Attorney General Tom Corbett. Corbett said that Bono had made two five-pound meth deliveries in Philadelphia and had conducted a transaction with a confidential source for 10 pounds at his Eagleville home.
Car kills man running for train
Calvin Erwin Jr., 22, of Smedley Street near Wingohocking, Logan, died when he was hit by a car as he ran to catch a train in Eastwick Tuesday night, police said.
Erwin died at the Hospital at the University of Pennsylvania at about 11:30 p.m., an hour after a red Chevrolet struck him on Bartram Avenue near 84th Street, police said. The driver stopped and no charges were expected.
Bomb hoax shuts Delco CC
A bomb threat yesterday that proved to be a hoax prompted Delaware County Community College to cancel classes and dismiss students at all five of its suburban campuses.
Marple Township Police Chief Tom Murray says the threat was phoned in at about 10:15 a.m., saying a bomb would go off at 2 p.m. The 27,000-student collegeheld evening classes as scheduled. *
