Two children were abducted and then found last night after their mother left them in her 2005 BMW sport utility vehicle, parked with the engine running, outside a relative's house near 33d and Baring Streets in Powelton Village, police said.

Nanette Hionas ran into her sister's home to pick her up around 7 p.m., police said. As she left the home, she saw the silver BMW X5 holding her 3-year-old daughter, Kaliopi, and 6-year-old son, George, headed east on Baring and then turning north on 31st Street.

After a two-hour search, police located the vehicle at 61st Street and Passyunk Avenue in Southwest Philadelphia, where they found the children in good condition. They did not say last night whether they had found the thief.

Police issued an Amber Alert for the children. Such alerts are issued when police believe an abducted child may be in imminent danger of death or serious injury. The alert was canceled after they were found.

Police said the children had been sleeping in the car and their mother did not want to wake them. They said the family was from the Northeast.

Southwest Detectives were investigating.
