Rain possible overnight, during Tuesday morning commute

Forecasters say the Philadelphia region could see more rain overnight and during the morning commute on Tuesday.

Isolated showers and thunderstorms could move into the southern part of the area this evening, but forecasters don't expect much precipitation until the overnight hours.

"Shower activity is expected to increase mostly after midnight and toward daybreak," a National Weather Service forecast discussion says.

There's a chance for thunderstorms overnight, the weather service says, and "shower and possible thunderstorm activity is expected to be ongoing at the start of Tuesday morning, so the morning rush will likely be affected."

Forecasters say there's a possibility of heavy rainfall throughout the day Tuesday, but widespread flash flooding isn't expected. Some flooding in poor-drainage areas could occur, however.

Any lingering rain in the area should end by midnight, the weather service says.

The cold front moving into the area is expected to bring gusty thunderstorms to the entire New England and Mid-Atlantic regions Tuesday, according to AccuWeather.

This summer has already been Philadelphia's wettest on record. The weather service says 25.54 inches of rain have fallen at Philadelphia International Airport since June 1.
