Police: Suspect in custody in deliberate Nicetown hit-and-run

Police have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash on North 17th Street that severed the leg of Beatrice Spence, of Nicetown.

Police have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that severed a Nicetown woman's leg Friday afternoon.

A woman surrendered to authorities around 11 a.m. Saturday, police said. Her identity was not immediately released, as she had not yet been formally charged.

The victim, identified as Beatrice Spence, 24, was standing outside her home on the 4400 block of North 17th Street when a woman with whom she was reportedly feuding deliberately rammed an SUV into her, police said.

The vehicle sped off down Wingohocking Street, leaving Spence with critical injuries.

The home's kitchen caught fire in the aftermath of the crash, as residents rushed to attend to Spence. Though no additional injuries were reported, the blaze gutted the property, according to investigators.

Neighbors said they believed Spence and the SUV's driver were involved in a dispute about a man.

Police said more information would be released once charges against the suspect were finalized.
