Insurance adjuster accused of defrauding N.J. Turnpike Authority

The owner of an insurance-adjustment company is accused of defrauding the New Jersey Turnpike Authority and other insurance companies of more than $200,000.

A criminal complaint against 54-year-old Robert Napolitano of Clifton, filed in federal court on Wednesday and charging him with mail fraud, was unsealed this morning.

Napolitano's insurance-adjusting business, called Dawn to Dusk, investigated crashes on the turnpike and determined the cost of repairs.

Federal prosecutors say Napolitano told insurance companies whose motorists caused damage to the turnpike to issue checks payable to Dawn to Dusk.

After receiving the checks, Napolitano didn't send them to the Turnpike Authority, court documents say. Instead, he shared the payments with a Turnpike Authority claims manager.

That manager, Gerardo Blasi, pleased guilty in December to his role in the scheme.

Between October 2011 and June 2013, Napolitano raked in more than $200,000 through taking payments meant for the Turnpike Authority, prosecutors said.

Napolitano is scheduled to have an initial court hearing this afternoon.
