Coast Guard cleaning up Delaware River oil spill

The U.S. Coast Guard is cleaning up after a crude oil spill in the Delaware River, the second such incident in the river near Philadelphia in the past week.

The Coast Guard said about 1,000 gallons of oil spilled into the river Monday afternoon near Monroe Energy LLC, which is located about one mile south of the Commodore Barry Bridge in Trainer, Delaware County.

The spill happened when a pipe ruptured when crews were off-loading oil, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection said today.

Authorities said a boom was deployed to contain the oil while emergency responders use skimmers and vacuums to clear the material from the river.

"While any spill into our waterways is unacceptable, reporting protocols were followed and we were able to respond quickly and effectively - the frigid weather and quick containment response have helped to minimize the impacts of this incident," DEP Secretary Chris Abruzzo said in a statement.

Pollution officials also responded to the scene.

The spill is the second time crude oil has made its way into in the Delaware in the region in the past week.

On Thursday, about 50 gallons spilled into the river from a South Philadelphia Sunoco facility, after 2,000 gallons discharged from a broken pipe onto a parking lot.
