Below-freezing temps hit Philadelphia region

Below-freezing temperatures have arrived in the Philadelphia region.

Overnight, the mercury dropped below 32 degrees in a number of places around the area, according to the National Weather Service.

At 6 a.m., it was just 27 degrees in Blue Bell and Doylestown. And temperatures below 30 degrees were recorded in Pomono, Wrightstown, Pottstown and Lancaster.

At Philadelphia International Airport, the mercury remained just above freezing at 34 degrees, while North Philadelphia hit freezing, with a temperature of 32 recorded at 6 a.m.

Further north, it was even colder: It was 22 degrees in Mount Pocono this morning, and 23 in Wilkes Barre. In North Jersey, Sussex had a temperature of just 20 degrees.

And forecasters say the rest of the day will be chilly as well.

The weather service is calling for a high of 47 in Philadelphia today, and high temperatures below 50 are expected for much of the rest of the region. The last time the mercury didn't top 50 in Philadelphia was April 3, according to the weather service.

A freeze warning remains in effect until 9 a.m.

The rest of the week should be warmer, with expected highs of 56 degrees Tuesday, 63 degrees Wednesday, 69 degrees Thursday and 53 degrees Friday.

Philadelphia hasn't hit a sub-freezing temperature since April 4. Overnight lows aren't expected to reach that mark this week, the weather service says.
