Smoky blaze quickly extinguished at S. Phila. refinery

A fire at a South Philadelphia oil refinery was quickly extinguished Friday, but not before sending plumes of black smoke into the sky.

The fire at the Philadelphia Energy Solutions Girard Point refinery, 3000 Penrose Ave., was reported at 5:49 p.m. and was declared under control at 6:29 p.m., fire officials said. No injuries were reported.

A Sunoco spokeswoman said the fire occurred at a pump at the refinery. - Robert Moran
