Monroe Energy L.L.C. and United Steelworkers Local 10-234 said Friday that they had reached a tentative agreement on local issues, including wages and benefits, involving 215 union members who work at Monroe's oil refinery in Trainer, Delaware County.

Spokesmen for both sides declined to give specific details.

Nearly 7,000 steelworkers are on strike at 15 facilities around the nation as the United Steelworkers union bargains a national contract. National negotiations are set for Monday on a three-year pact affecting 30,000 steelworkers.

The local agreement includes a commitment for followup talks after a resolution is reached in the national contract. That contract sets the pattern for local contracts.

Technically, local steelworkers could still join their brethren on strike if the national issues aren't resolved. The national contract expired a month ago. The contract ended March 1 at Monroe, which processes crude oil into refined products for Delta Airlines.
