Wave of violence leaves one dead

Seven people were shot, one of them fatally, in a wave of violence Thursday that spanned nine hours and stretched across the city.

The bloodshed began about 11 a.m., when a 32-year-old bicyclist was shot numerous times - at least once in the head - by two young men who were also on bikes on Pine Street near 59th in West Philly, police said. The victim, whose name was not released, died at the scene.

About 20 minutes later, a 36-year-old man was shot in the arm on Frazier Street near Chester Avenue in Kingsessing, said Lt. John Walker of Southwest Detectives. The victim was listed in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

A 32-year-old man was wounded several times on Eastwick Terrace near 54th Street in Southwest Philly about 3 p.m., Walker said, and admitted to HUP in critical condition.

An hour later, a 35-year-old man was shot in the shoulder while he was driving in a car near 52nd Street and Woodland Avenue. He was treated at HUP and released, Walker said.

About 5 p.m., a man was chased and shot by an unknown gunman on Ditman Street near Sanger in the Northeast, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. The victim ran to a friend's house on nearby Cheltenham Avenue and was later admitted to Aria Hospital-Torresdale in critical condition.

Three hours later, Small said, a 26-year-old man was shot in the thigh at Rising Sun Avenue near Comly. He was admitted to Albert Einstein Medical Center in stable condition and police recovered three weapons at the crime scene, Small said.

At 8:15 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in the stomach at 17th and Dauphin streets in North Philly, small said. The victim was admitted to Temple University Hospital in stable condition.
