A violent hit-and-run involving two cars in Tacony Wednesday morning killed a 33-year-old man who was ejected from the back seat of a car, police said.

About 12:30 a.m., a 2003 Toyota Corolla slammed into an older model Toyota Corolla, which was in the intersection of Disston Street and Torresdale Avenue, causing the second car to crash through a fence of a home and land on its lawn, police said.

Both vehicles remained at the scene, but a man and woman who were in the striking Toyota fled on foot, police said. Police were still searching for them early Wednesday.

Three people were in the 1999 Toyota Corolla that was hit, police said. A 33-year-old man who was in the backseat was ejected from the car on impact and was pronounced dead at 1:38 a.m. at Aria-Jefferson Health's Torresdale hospital, police said.

The 31-year-old male driver and a 27-year-old woman, who was the front-seat passenger of the older Toyota, were also taken to the same hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police did not release any names. The crash remains under investigation.
