17-year-old shot near Temple, suspect escapes, police say

A 17-year-old was shot in North Philadelphia on Tuesday afternoon and a potential suspect was temporarily barricaded in an apartment nearby before managing to escape, according to police.

SWAT officers were called to the apartment building on the 2100 block of North 17th Street after the suspect holed up inside, around 4:22 p.m., police said. The suspect ran to the apartment after the male victim, who was not identified, was shot once in the hip around 3:55 p.m. on 17th Street near Susquehanna Avenue, police said.

The apartment standoff ended when police cleared the apartment around 6:30 p.m. and found a handgun behind the property. The suspect managed to escape, police said. Authorities did not provide identifying characteristics about the suspect, such as gender or age.

The victim was taken to Temple University Hospital and was listed in critical condition, police said.
