Container and rocket-like item causes evacuations in North Philly

The container smelled of gasoline, police said.

Police evacuated several houses in North Philadelphia Sunday afternoon after a container that smelled of gasoline was found in the road with a rocket-like item placed on top of it.

The scene was cleared by the Philadelphia Police Department's Bomb Squad within an hour, but police have not yet detailed exactly what the objects were or who placed them in the roadway.

Around 3:46 p.m. authorities responded to the 2000 block of West York Street and found a large container that smelled of gas with "an item that looks like a rocket that is on top of the container," police said in a news release.

The police department's Bomb Squad and the fire department responded. Several buildings were evacuated as a precaution, authorities said, but residents were allowed to return once the scene was cleared around 4:45 p.m.
