Small fire at shop in PAFA building reported

A seventh-floor fire at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Hamilton building late Friday was small, and was contained to the metal fabrication shop, said PAFA president/CEO David R. Brigham.

A small fire broke out on the seventh floor of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts' Hamilton building late Friday, officials said.

The blaze, which started around 5:45 p.m., was contained to the metal fabrication shop, said PAFA president/CEO David R. Brigham. No shop equipment was damaged, though there was some damage to the space from smoke and water.

The fire broke out two floors above the museum's art-storage facility, so the spread of water used to put out the fire was being monitored. Museum galleries in the Frank Furness-designed historic building next door were unaffected, and the Hamilton building was expected to open Monday, Brigham said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
