A cab driver hit a pedestrian, lost control of his taxi and plowed into a shoe store in Roxborough Thursday afternoon, police said.

The cab was turning left from Leverington Avenue onto Ridge and hit a 64-year-old man around 2:30 p.m., said Officer Tanya Little, a police spokeswoman.

The cabbie then crashed through the front of Sneakertown, a footwear and clothing store, and stopped when more than half of the vehicle was parked inside the store, Little said.

The pedestrian was taken to Temple University Hospital, and was listed in stable condition as of 5 p.m.

Little said the man was complaining of pain in his right side.

Police are investigating the accident, and said it is unlikely that the taxi driver will face any charges.

It seems that motorists have forgotten that motor vehicles need to yield to pedestrians. That is the law, certainly where there are marked walkways. There should be no reason for a motor vehicle to make a turn and hit a pedestrian. I wonder why it is "unlikely that the taxi driver will face any charges".

I find it incredible that often motorists making right turns on red will expect pedestrians to yield to them. And if the motorists are stopped at a red light and the light changes to green while a pedestrian is still crossing in front of them, they will expect the pedestrian to run or be run over. People's level of consideration for their fellow humans is at an all-time low.

I agree that there are far too many drivers who fail to yield to pedestrians, but all things being equal, there are far too many pedestrians who carelessly and improperly cross the street. Not a day goes by that I don't see a pedestrian literally walking into traffic with their head down, playing with their MP3 player, or talking on their cell phone without even bothering to look up to see if it's safe to cross, yet the driver is expected to stop on a dime to prevent from hitting them.

I agree with you. When I'm in someone's car, I see people walk out in the middle of traffic EXPECTING the cars to stop. Which is insane. As a pedestrian, however, it's actually safer, for me, to cross in the middle of the street (sans cars) the crossing at the corner. I've been hit by a car twice in my life so far and have been almost hit numerous amounts of time because drivers just CAN'T wait 5 seconds for you to finish crossing the street because they just HAVE to turn before the light turns red. Drivers just don't seem to care. I had one woman who made a wild turn to beat an oncoming car, while I was in the middle of the street, almost hit me and then shrug it off when I yelled at her to pay attention. It's a real shame.

Unless the report is slipshod and there's more to this story, I can't understand why it's " unlikely " charges will be filed against the cab driver.
