Downpours cause serious flooding

Downpours from scattered thunderstorms caused flooding problems around the area this morning and afternoon, even as flash flood warnings remained in effect till 3:30 p.m. for Delaware County, till 4:30 p.m. for central Camden County.

Flooding trapped some midday shoppers inside a BJ's Wholesale Club in Springfield, Delaware County, with water rescues reported in Lima and widespread flooding in Upper Darby, according ot the weather service.

Several cars were reportedly stuck in flooded streets in Somerdale, Camden County.

Glendora, Camden County, had 2.79 inches of rain this morning, while Jackson Township, Atlantic County, had just slightly less, according to the weather service.

Scattered thunderstorms were expected to remain a possibility overnight, with a chance of more rain into Tuesday afternoon, before the pattern breaks, according to Jim Bunker of the weather service.

"The rest of the week actually looks pretty good," he said.

Although large hail and even the possibility of a tornado were part of a morning severe thunderstorm watch for Philadelphia and nearby South Jersey, they never happened, Bunker said.

Flash flood warnings were issued at various times for Philadelphia, and three nearby South Jersey counties: Camden, Gloucester and Burlington, while Bucks and Montgomery Counties were part of less-serious flood advisories. Generally, the concerns were for low-lying or poorly drained areas.

High tide on the Delaware was adding to the threat, the weather service noted.
