Sports bar worker beaten with broom handle during robbery attempt in Newark

A female employee of the Chestnut Sports Bar and Lounge in Newark was beaten with a broom handle during an attempted robbery.

An employee of a Newark, Del. sports bar was beaten with a broom handle during an attempted robbery Friday night.

The suspect was initially a patron of the Chestnut Sports Bar and Lounge at 15 Prestbury Square, Delaware State Police said in a news release.

Shortly after 8 p.m., the man went into the bar's bathroom. Police said he reemerged minutes later, armed with a broom handle.

He allegedly approached a 64-year-old female employee who was cleaning the business and struck her with the makeshift weapon.

Police said he implied he had a gun and demanded money from the register.

The two struggled until a 47-year-old male customer walked in and interrupted, according to investigators.

While attempting to detain the suspect, he also began grappling with the man, police said.

The suspect was eventually able to break free, fleeing west on foot.

The male victim suffered a minor injury that did not require immediate medical attention, according to investigators. No additional injuries were reported.

The suspect is described only as a 5-foot-5-inch to 5-foot-9-inch tall, balding black male between the ages of 30 and 35. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a green T-shirt, police said.
