What you need to know: Snow prompts school, transit, government closings

Even with significantly lower snow totals than forecasted in the Philadelphia region, the expected storm has prompted schools and government offices to close, and affected transit operations. Here's the latest on what you need to know:

MASS TRANSIT

SEPTA: All Regional Rail lines are operating on a Saturday schedule. Cynwyd Line trains are not running. There is no A/B service on the Market-Frankford subway line; all trains are making all stops. Buses are operating on a regular weekday schedule. Pre-emptive bus detours are in the process of being lifted. Currently there are 9 bus routes on detour. More information at septa.org.

PATCO: Trains are running on a snow schedule. Service is running at reduced speeds.

NEW JERSEY TRANSIT: Bus service has resumed in South Jersey and will resume in North Jersey around 11 a.m. RiverLine Light Rail service also resuming. Rail service will be starting to resume by late morning, after mandatory federal inspections. The Atlantic City Line resumed shortly before 9 a.m., while the Northeast Corridor line was slated to start running around 10:15 a.m., both on weekend schedules. More information at njtransit.com.

AMTRAK: Northeast Corridor and Acela Express trains are not running between New York City and Boston. Those trains will operate with reduced frequencies between New York and Washington, D.C., as will Keystone Service trains between New York and Harrisburg.

DRIVING

A travel ban for New Jersey motorists has been lifted for the entire state.  The ban went into effect at 11 p.m. for roads across New Jersey. According to the ban, only emergency vehicles, utility crews and others working on storm preparation and recovery were allowed on the streets. Drivers working for selected industries and businesses, including news media, gas stations, food stores and hardware stores, are also excluded.

The speed limit has been reduced to 35 mph on the Walt Whitman, Benjamin Franklin, Betsy Ross and Commodore Barry bridges. The Ben Franklin Bridge pedestrian walkway is also closed.

Speed limits on the New Jersey Turnpike and Garden State Parkway have been reduced to 45 mph.

Philadelphia officials have lifted the snow emergency in the city. Normal parking can resume on snow emergency routes. Mayor Nutter had declared the emergency starting at 6 p.m. Monday, banning parking on designated snow emergency routes.

Many towns in the suburbs also declared snow emergencies, barring parking on certain streets.

AIRPORT

More than 800 flights arriving at or departing from of Philadelphia International Airport have been canceled today, according to the flight-tracking website FlightAware.com. The site says 88 percent of departing flights and nearly 80 percent of arriving flights have been canceled. Check www.phl.or for flight information.

The Airport provided this update at 7 a.m.:

-Airways/American Airlines -- operating only a handful of arrivals later tonight and a departure to Tel Aviv tonight
-Delta Air Lines - operating most flights
-Southwest Airlines - planning to resume a full schedule this afternoon
-United Airlines - operating one arrival this evening
-Air Canada - operating one arrival this evening
-British Airways - operating one flight to London this evening
-Jet Blue - all flights canceled today into and out of PHL
-Frontier Airlines - all flights canceled today into and out of PHL
-Qatar Airways - flights canceled today into and out of PHL

SCHOOLS

The Philadelphia School District and schools in the Archdiocese of Philadelphia will be closed today.

Many other districts in the suburbs are closed as well, though some districts, including Chester County schools, will have delayed openings. A full list of school closings is available here.

Classes are canceled at all Rutgers University campuses. Rowan University is also closed. Most other universities in the area are either open as usual or will have a delayed opening.

GOVERNMENT

All Philadelphia government offices and courts are closed today. Trash collection in Philadelphia is canceled today; trash should be held until next Tuesday.

There are no inmate visits in the Philadelphia Prison System today.

All New Jersey state offices are closed for non-essential employees. Courts are also closed.

Government offices in Burlington and Camden counties are closed today.

Facilities, including courts, are opening late in Bucks, Chester, Delaware and Montgomery counties.
