SEPTA planning 'major' change for Market East

SEPTA is planning to announce a "major" change at the transit agency's Market East station this week.

SEPTA is planning to announce a "major" change at the transit agency's Market East station this week.

The agency has scheduled a Thursday news conference to provide details about the change. Officials slated to attend include SEPTA general manager Joseph Casey, board chairman Pasquale Deon, City Councilman Mark Squilla, and SEPTA board member Cuyler Walker.

SEPTA didn't provide additional details about the planned change; spokeswoman Kristin Geiger said she couldn't comment in advance of Thursday's event.

The announcement comes a week after Technical.ly Philly reported that the Market East station may be renamed Jefferson Station, a nod to the nearby Thomas Jefferson University and hospital.

A tipster sent the news website a photo of a map with Jefferson Station replacing Market East. A SEPTA spokeswoman told the site the map was "nothing we are ready or able to talk about publicly."

SEPTA's announcement about the news conference didn't mention a possible renaming but noted that the Market East station is "a transportation hub for residents and tourists visiting Philadelphia's renowned museums, nationally recognized Jefferson Hospital and first-class restaurants."
