SEPTA K-9 officers graduate

SEPTA held a graduation ceremony Wednesday for the two newest members of the transit agency's four-legged police force.

K-9 officers Ronnie, a German shepherd, and Kaiserin, a Dutch shepherd, officially joined their partners, officers Javier Class and Cory Fox.

Both Ronnie and Kaiserin attended the Penn Working Dog Center, which trains detection dogs for deployment in the fields of public safety and health. Participants first undergo core training, then specialize in areas of detection best suited to them. Each dog in the program, which runs five days a week, is named after a canine counterpart that served on 9/11.

Ronnie and Kaiserin will next participate in a SEPTA explosives class and undergo patrol work training. They'll be deployed in mid-April and will specialize in explosives detection.
