Report: Chicago woman arrested 396 times

Beat cops on the North side of Chicago know Shermain Miles well.

They've seen her more times than they can count – drunk, half-naked, cursing and once lunging at someone with a dinner fork, according to a report in the Chicago Sun Times.

Last summer police were called by passing motorists reporting a woman foaming at the mouth and lying in the road. Sure enough, the responding officer recognized Shermain Miles.

The newspaper reports that Chicago Police have arrested Miles 396 times since 1978. Of those arrests, 92 were for theft, 65 for disorderly conduct, 59 for prostitution-related offenses, and five for robbery-related offenses.

But nothing has worked to keep Miles, 51, in jail, although she is there now. The jails are too overcrowded and money has been cut for mental health funding. Miles, you see, is 'acutely psychotic' but still roams the streets, mostly on the North Side.

Today, the Illinois Prisoner Review Board is set to decide whether Miles violated the terms of her parole. If so, she could be held until next year.
