Powerball jackpot fourth biggest in U.S. history

Update Aug. 6: "Powerball raises jackpot to $425 million."

The Powerball jackpot has skyrocketed to $400 million, the fourth biggest prize ever for any U.S. lottery, the third biggest in Powerball history.

The promised cash: a whopping $230.3 million. The annuity jackpot soared by $100 million, after nobody matched all the numbers drawn Saturday night -- 21, 24, 36, 42 and 45, with a Powerball of 15.

But don't expect the jackpot stop there for Wednesday's drawing. In May, a $350 million jackpot got hiked by $10 million before the next drawing, which initially produced an estimate of $475 million for the next top prize.

That wound up at $590 million, the biggest Powerball jackpot ever, and the second biggest in U.S. history. No jackpot has hit $400 million without being won, so if this one rolls over, it might top the record $656 million, set by Mega Millions in March 2012.

Saturday night, nine Powerball tickets matched the first five numbers, most of them, including a ticket sold in Pennsylvania, winning $1 million.

Florida and Texas had $2 million winners (those players had the Power Play prize boosting option) while California will pay out $1.16 million under its pari-mutuel system to its player who matched the first five numbers. Michigan and Georgia each had two $1 million winners, and Washington State had one.

Powerball sales won't be hurt by rival Mega Millions, whose jackpot for Tuesday's drawing will be $20 million.

Nobody matched all the numbers drawn Friday night: 8, 21, 23, 25, and 39 with a Mega Ball of 4. New Jersey, Ohio, Kentucky, Arizona and California each had a player match the first five numbers, winning at least $250,000.
