Philly police union offers $10,000 more for Amber Long homicide arrests

Philadelphia's police officers' union made an unusual offer Monday afternoon when it put another $10,000 on the table for anyone who comes forward and gives information leading to arrests in last month's slaying of a young woman as her mother watched.

The Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 upped the reward money from $10,000 to $20,000, but the unusual part is that the additional money is only on the table until this Sunday, Feb. 16, the union said in a statement.

"The additional $10,000 is for the following: Information leading to the arrest of the persons responsible for the death of Amber Long as long as the information is received by 11:59 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 16, 2014. After which, the original $10,000 will still stand," the FOP statement read.

Long, 26, of South Philly, died from a gunshot to the chest during an apparent robbery as she walked along the 900 block of North Front Street on Sunday, Jan. 19. Three young men walked up to Long and her mother and tried to take Long's purse. She refused to give it to them before one of the robbers shot her, the FOP said.

"By all accounts, Amber Long had done nothing but become educate and lead a worthwhile life," the FOP statement said. "Lodge 5 hopes that this new reward will create the environment where the people who jnow who did this will come forward and give information on the three people who killed Amber Long."
