Philadelphia police officer among 66 charged during July 4 weekend for DUI

A veteran Philadelphia police officer was one of 66 drivers charged with DUIs during a crackdown over the extended July 4 weekend.

Eugene Daniel, 53, was off-duty when he was involved in a crash at North 33rd Street and Girard Avenue shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, police said.

His vehicle traveling west on Girard Avenue collided with another vehicle heading north on 33rd Street, police said. After the crash, two people went to hospitals for evaluation and police charged Daniel with DUI, criminal mischief and simple assault.

Daniel, assigned to the 16th District, will be pulled from street duty, a police spokeswoman said Monday afternoon.

The 66 driving under the influence charges came during a period starting last Wednesday and ending Sunday. Police said 76 drivers were charged over the same weekend in 2012.
