Philadelphia forecast: High temps, heavy wind and rain

Philadelphians can expect unseasonably warm temperatures, along with periods of heavy wind and rain, today.

The National Weather Service says Philadelphia's high temperature should reach 60 degrees today -- nearly 20 degrees warmer than the normal high of 41.

Still, today's warmth should fall far shy of record the high of 70 degrees set in 1947.

Accompanying the warm temperatures today in the Philadelphia region are fog, wind, rain and potentially thunderstorms.

A dense fog advisory is in effect until 8 a.m., the weather service says. Commuters should be careful; visibility may be les than a quarter mile during parts of the morning rush.

And later today, strong rain and winds are expected to move through the area.

The weather service said the region can expect gusts between 45 and 50 mph. The service has issued a wind advisory for 6 p.m. today until 3 a.m. Thursday.

A powerful storm will result in "scattered heavy but fast-moving showers" in the evening. Thunderstorms are possible between 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the weather service.

Forecasters say extended downpours could cause flash flooding.

The strong winds may knock down tree limbs, which could lead to scattered power outages.

After all that, Philadelphians can expect a return to normal-for-January weather later this week: Thursday's high temperature is predicted to reach 46 degrees, slightly warmer than average, but cooler temps are predicted for Friday and Saturday. A high of just 36 degrees is expected for those days.

And forecasters say there's a chance we could see snow Thursday night or Friday.
