Cops: One arrested in assault on officer at Union Transfer
A man was arrested early Saturday after allegedly punching a police officer in the face during a brawl inside music venue Union Transfer.
Police said a sixth district officer was working near 10th and Spring Garden streets when, around 12:45 a.m., he and two nearby state troopers were told bouncers had detained a man inside the club, located at 1026 Spring Garden St.
As the officers approached the venue, they found two to three bouncers were holding a man on the ground, according to investigators. One of the bouncers told police the man had punched him five times.
As the police officer took ahold of the man’s arm in an attempt to subdue him, the suspect allegedly jumped up and punched the officer in the face with a closed fist. The officer, along with the two troopers, wrestled the man to the ground and handcuffed him.
The officer, who sustained two small lacerations, was treated and released from Hahnemann University Hospital.
The suspect, 20-year-old Kevin Baker Jr., of the 1600 block of North 21st Street in North Philadelphia, will be charged with assault on police, according to investigators.
