New security check at this weekend's Philadelphia Triathlon

New security procedures will be in place at this weekend's TriRock Philadelphia Triathlon.

Athletes who bring duffel bags or backpacks to the transition area will have their bags screened, race organizers said in a Facebook post Thursday evening.

The sprint triathlon and kid fun run take place Saturday. The Olympic race, which includes elite athlets, occurs Sunday. All of the events take place in Fairmount Park.

The transition area will be open to athletes earlier, starting at 5 a.m. Saturday and 4:30 a.m. Sunday, due to the extra security procedures.

"Please allow yourself enough time on race morning due to these additional security measures," the race says.

Clear bags must be used at the swim start.

Since April's bombings at the Boston Marathon finish line, organizers of major sporting events have been grappling with security issues. Last week, the NFL announced that purses, backpacks and other items will be banned from football stadiums this season.
