Montco father charged after 2-month-old daughter's death

A Hatboro man has been charged with endangering children after his two-month-old daughter died over the weekend.

Edward Doyle, 28, was taken into custody Sunday, according to the Montgomery County District Attorney's Office. He is being held on $1 million bail.

His two-month-old daughter, Makayla Doyle, was found unresponsive in the family's apartment on the 2500 block of Horsham Road around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, according to court documents. She was taken to Abington Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Authorities said an autopsy is under way and her death remains under investigation.

Court documents say officers who responded to the home saw "red swelling on Makayla's forehead and bruising and cuts on the bridge of her nose."

Under questioning from police, Doyle said he was carrying Makayla in the early-morning on Sunday, hit a baby swing in the living room while he was walking and landed on top of Makayla when he fell to the floor, according to the documents. He told detectives that he checked to see if the girl was still breathing, then put her in the baby swing.

Doyle also told police that he "drank too much" and shouldn't have been caring for the child, court documents say.

On Saturday evening, Doyle went to Willow Grove for a friend's birthday celebration and drank six Budweiser beers. He returned home between 2:45 and 3 a.m. Sunday.

Doyle initially only told police that Makayla was in the baby swing when he went to sleep; when he awoke, she was "white as a ghost" and "limp."

He later told detectives about the fall and said he had picked up Makayla because she was crying. He said he checked on the child at about 7:15 a.m. and gave her a pacifier, though he was "groggy" at the time. He later called 911 after finding her unresponsive.
