Juan Torres, charged with firing at police.
Juan Torres, charged with firing at police.

Police shot and wounded a robbery suspect who fired a gun at an officer overnight in West Philadelphia.

The shooting happened at about midnight, after officers responded to a report of a robbery at a 7-Eleven, police said.

An officer tried to stop a man who fit the description of the suspect. A struggle ensued, and the suspect fired a gun at the officer.

The officer wasn't hit, and returned fire.

The suspect, identified this afternoon as Juan Torres, 30, of the 3200 block of Henry Avenue, was struck at least once in the leg. Torres fired his gun a second time, and again missed the officer, police said.

He tried to run away, but was quickly apprehended.

The incident happened near South 57th Street and Montrose Street.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and charges are pending.

Will somebody please tell that idiot above me that it was already reported that the suspect had absolutely nothing to do with the 7-11 robbery. Get Vanna White and Pat Sajak on the line so this idiotic fool can buy a clue because he is about as dumb as a box of hammers sitting next to a left hand brick splitter.

I would like to commend this officer on a job well done with the end result being one that everyone can be happy about. This officer gets to go home to his family with a clean and clear conscience having not shot and killed another human being. The suspect gets to live another day which also affords him a chance to turn his life around because just like the police officer the suspect also has family and people who loves him. But leave it to you idiots up there in the northeast ghetto hiding in your basements because you are to scared to even mow your own lawn to comment on how the officer should have killed this man. Not one of you idiots have the slightest clue of what it does to you to take another persons life even if it is justified. Alls you idiots need to do in order to have some idea of what it does to a person is look back at the number of good-old-boy-cops from the northeast who have tried to eat a whole box of bullets but never getting past that first one. That should give you some idea, and also remember that these too were your heros at the time because of the same bias reasons that are evident in your comments today. So without the help of you fearful idiots who are to scared to mow your own lawns or who has to be talked out of killing your idiot (A) self every time the door bell rings GREAT POLICE WORK OFFICER.- MAY THE LORD BLESS YOU FOR YOUR COMPASSION FOR YOUR FELLOW MAN, unlike the people who live in bungalows.

I would love to see an aspiring yong reported follow this story and add up the costs the taxpayers will be hit with for this. Legal, medical, incarceration etc. I would also like to see a profile of the offender and see if he came from a traditional 2 parent family and how much we have been charged for his care and feeding from the day he was born. Has he ever paid income tax and so on. In the millions is my best estimate.

    Nice work officers!
Private gun owners tend to be shots than police officers...until rounds start whizzing over their head.

Thank you PPD. I just wish you guys would spend more time at the range so there wouldn't be this mandatory trip to the E-room. The garbage could just be bagged at the scene and put on the curb. Good job though!
