Juan Torres, charged with firing at police.

Police shot and wounded a robbery suspect who fired a gun at an officer overnight in West Philadelphia.

The shooting happened at about midnight, after officers responded to a report of a robbery at a 7-Eleven, police said.

An officer tried to stop a man who fit the description of the suspect. A struggle ensued, and the suspect fired a gun at the officer.

The officer wasn't hit, and returned fire.

The suspect, identified this afternoon as Juan Torres, 30, of the 3200 block of Henry Avenue, was struck at least once in the leg. Torres fired his gun a second time, and again missed the officer, police said.

He tried to run away, but was quickly apprehended.

The incident happened near South 57th Street and Montrose Street.

The suspect was taken to a hospital for treatment and charges are pending.
